Career

Michael Hübler obtained the German Abitur at the Albstadt-Ebingen High School in 1981 and the Swiss Matura at the University of Zurich in 1983 . From 1982 to 1983 he served in the air force of the German Bundeswehr . He completed his medical training from 1983 to 1989 at the University of Duisburg-Essen . From 1989 he worked as a cardiac surgeon in the department for cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery at the German Heart Center Berlin . From 1997 to 1998 he specialized in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Hôspital Marie Lannelongue in Paris. He then headed the Department of Surgery for Congenital Heart Defects at the German Heart Center Berlin, where he was deputy clinic director from 2009. On July 1, 2012, he was appointed chief physician in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Children's Hospital Zurich and appointed as Associate Professor for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Zurich . In November 2018, he left the Children's Hospital Zurich due to different ideas about the strategic direction of the Children's Heart Center there, which he was head of. Until January 2021 he will continue to be a professor at the University of Zurich and work in artificial heart research.

Hübler was released at the end of January 2020. The Zurich Administrative Court rejected his lawsuit against the dismissal because his terms of employment were unlawful: Hübler received an annual salary of 500,000 francs as the chief physician of pediatric cardiac surgery, and around 200,000 francs a year for the extraordinary professorship at the University of Zurich. For the administrative court this was "far beyond the legal framework" and was "inadmissible".

Michael Hübler is married to the German heart surgeon Samira Hübler.
