The Geopark Vulkaneifel was included in the newly established Global Network of National Geoparks (GNNG) in 2004 . In 2005, the Vulkanland Eifel National Geopark was formed from the Vulkaneifel Geopark, the Vulkanpark in the Mayen-Koblenz district and the Brohltal / Laacher See volcano park . On May 31, 2010, the Vulkaneifel Geopark was also established as a nature park. In 2015 the Geopark Vulkaneifel was awarded the title UNESCO Global Geopark and it was included in the newly established Global Geoparks Network (GGN). Since only the western part of the national Geopark was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark and various funding instruments were used in the sub-areas, the operators of the Vulkaneifel Geopark sought a status as an independent national Geopark. As a result, the Geopark Vulkanland Eifel was divided into the independent national Geoparks Vulkaneifel in the west and Laacher See in the east. The geological features of the Geopark have been mapped across the board in the smartphone application OutcropWizard since May 2020 .
