The Ernstberg (also called Erensberg or Erresberg ) near Hinterweiler in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate is 699.8  m above sea level. NHN the highest of the Westeifel volcanoes and after the Hohe Acht ( 746.9  m ) the second highest mountain in the Eifel .

The Ernstberg is located in the center of the Vulkaneifel Nature Park in the area of ​​the Hinterweiler community. Its peak rises around 1.2 km southeast (as the crow flies ) from the village church. Dockweiler is located north-northeast of the mountain , Waldkönigen to the east, Steinborn to the south-southeast and Kirchweiler to the west .

The Ernstberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Eastern Eifel (No. 27), in the main unit Kyllburger Waldeifel (277) and in the sub-unit Kyllburger Waldrücke (277.2) to the natural area Prümscheid (277.20), whereby directly in the southwest over northwest to northeast in the main unit Kalkeifel (276) and in the subunit Northern Vulkaneifel (276.8) the natural area Dockweiler Vulkaneifel (276.81) is adjacent.

Geology and flora

The Ernstberg is an old Pleistocene stratovolcano with a characteristic ring-shaped arrangement of welding slag and basalt deposits ( nepheline leucite). Its summit consists of sweat slag that builds up a crater wall open to the east . The basalt masses flowed out here, forming a semicircle on the eastern slope of the mountain; From the Middle Ages to around 1930, millstones were broken at the foot of the mountain . Moon violets ( Lunaria rediviva ) occur in its forest landscape .

Cave and Martinswand

A little below the Ernstberg summit is a cave that leads from one side of the mountain to the other. Their entrances are locked so that entering the cave is not possible. The rocky Martinswand is located on the south-eastern flank of the mountain .

Protected areas

In large parts of the Ernst Berg from the on September 20, 1978 is county government Trier designated nature reserve Ernstberg ( CDDA -No. 81623), the 96  ha is great. Within this area, the summit of the Ernstberg (ND-7233-525) has been designated as an extensive natural monument since April 16, 1938 ; its protective purpose is to preserve the stratovolcano. In winter there are often good winter sports opportunities on the Ernstberg due to the altitude. There are groomed cross-country trails, a toboggan slope and a hut with ski rental.

Traffic and walking

Several roads run around the Ernstberg: A few kilometers east of the mountain runs the federal highway 421 , which leads from the northern Dockweiler , past Waldkönigen into southern Daun . From this road branches off at Waldkönigen the district road  35, which meets the K 12 leading south to Steinborn in the village . From there, the state road  28 leads northwest to Kirchweiler , where the K 36 leads northeast to Hinterweiler .
