Geographical location
The Nerother Kopf rises in the Vulkaneifel Nature Park on the eastern edge of the Gerolsteiner Land. As part of its north tip, it is located around 1 km east-southeast of Neroth, 2.5 km west-southwest of Neunkirchen , 3.5 km west of Pützborn and 2 km (as the crow flies ) north of Oberstadtfeld . About 450 m from the north summit is the lower south summit. To the west past the mountain, the Kleine Kyll flows through Neroth .
Description and history
On the northern tip of the original distinctive double-volcano are under monument protection standing castle ruins Freudenkoppe (built 1337-1340) and the millstone cave . In the cave near the summit, whose entrance is at a point 643.2 m high, the Nerother Wandervogel was founded on New Year's Eve 1919/1920 .
The Nerother Kopf nature reserve around the beech- wooded north summit is a popular hiking and recreation area, made accessible, among other things, by the Eifelsteig , which leads directly over the summit. The southern knoll, which is not forested in the high areas, has been mined for basalt extraction for many years ; of this, the snow-covered edge of the excavation can be seen on the horizon to the right of the summit in the above photo.
