Mosbruch pond

The Mosbruch Weiher , also known as the Mosbrucher Maar , is a silted up maar east of the local border of Mosbruch in the Vulkaneifel . It is right at the foot of the 675 meter high Hochkelberg , a former volcano . The bottom of the maar has the shape of an elongated oval and is around 700 × 500 meters in size, the upper border has a diameter of around 1,300 × 1,050 m. This makes the Mosbrucher Maar the third largest of the Westeifelmaars. The Üßbach rises in the area of the Mosbruch pond .

Emergence

According to pollen analysis, the crater was created about 11,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. In the vicinity of the Maars compared to other Eifelmaaren very little is volcanic tuffs present, only two places greater Tuffvorkommen are open , the rest of the edge is covered only by a thin Tuffschleier. Either most of the tuff that has been extracted has already been removed, or the eruption has only produced very little tuff.

After the end of the volcanic activity , water collected in the maar basin and a very shallow maar lake was created. Because of the low water level silted the Maar very quickly, it was formed after a few thousand years ago, a Moor .

Even in Roman times - remnants of Roman systems are still present on the Hochkelberg - water was dammed up again in order to preserve the still existing pond as fishing waters. In 1838 the water was drained from the pond to use the western outlying areas as arable land . Today there is meadow and pasture land there , the eastern part has retained its moor character.

In the 20th century, the 6 meter thick layer of peat in the pond was used to dig peat for heating. The peat extraction stopped in the 1950s.

Nature reserve

The moor has created an excellent habitat for rare plants and animals. In 1980 the Mosbruch pond was declared a nature reserve. It was the 100th nature reserve in Rhineland-Palatinate . The long-term renaturation measure is embedded in the overall project "Restoration and preservation of hillside, raised and intermediate moors as well as adjacent habitats in the Hunsrück and the Eifel", with the "Foundation for Nature and Environment Rhineland-Palatinate" as the project sponsor. Visitors to the maar are guided through the area through sensibly designed walkways without damaging the maar.
