The average water level of the maar is 406.6  m above sea level. NHN , the Maarboden at 368  m above sea level. NHN . Parts of the lake are used as an outdoor swimming pool in summer, which greatly affects the maar area as a nature reserve .

During the volcanic steam explosion that gave rise to the maar, only a thin ridge of slate , greywacke and sandstone remained between the maar and the neighboring Liesertal . On a path around the maar you can find these Devonian stones scattered around the lake. Numerous ejections can be found particularly in the north-western area of the maar .
