The Immerather Maar is located in the municipality of Immerath in the Vulkaneifel district in a designated nature reserve and FFH area .

Emergence

The maar was created by volcanic activity around 40,000 to 70,000 years ago. Around the year 1750, the maar was drained and drained by a maar stream and subsequently served as pasture . The maar area was even parceled out. Between 1914 and 1918 the stream overran, it came to a damming and the formation of a flat maar. The height of the water level has hardly changed significantly since then.

useful information

The Immerather Maar is the smallest and flattest of the Eifel maars. It lies at a height of 368.1 m above sea level. The water surface is around 60,000 m², the water volume is around 90,000 m³. The water depth is a maximum of 2.90 m, while the average depth is around 1.50 m. The ground is flat and level, and only in the bank areas are there obstacles in the form of fallen trees and tree stumps in the water. The ground slopes evenly from the bank towards the middle of the maar. Only in the area of the outlet is there an edge where the depth drops from 0.6 m to 2.8 m over a length of 5 m. Due to the increased vegetation in recent years, the cloudiness of the water is reduced and now fluctuates between 0.25 and 2.0 m depending on the season. The water has a renewal time of 0.3 years. The maar has no above-ground inflow. It is fed solely from the surface and ground water of the crater. It has a catchment area of 640,000 m². The bank extends over a length of 800 m.
