The Geopark Eiszeitland on the edge of the Oder is located in the northeast of the state of Brandenburg (in the area northeast of Berlin) and includes parts of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and the Lower Odertal National Park . In the Geopark Eiszeitland on the edge of the Oder , all elements of the glacial series ( ground moraine , terminal moraine , sand sand and glacial valley ) are completely preserved and modeled like in no other region. It covers a total area of 3,487 km².

On September 5, 2006, the expert commission of the GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation in Clausthal-Zellerfeld awarded the Geopark Eiszeitland on the edge of the Oder the title “National Geopark in Germany”.

location

Gross-Ziethen Geopark

The southern border runs north of Berlin between Bernau and Biesenthal. In the north the Geopark extends to Prenzlau and in the northwest to the former National Geopark "Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape". Here the park includes the communities of Groß Schönebeck , Templin and Lychen . In the east, the park runs along the border with Poland with the municipalities of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) , Oderberg , Schwedt / Oder and Gartz (Oder) . The core of the Geopark encompasses the communities of Angermünde in the north, Joachimsthal, Chorin and Eberswalde in the south.

organization

Until December 31, 2012, the sponsor of the Geopark Eiszeitland am Oderrand was the European Regionale Förderverein eV , whose statutes were also binding for the Geopark and the principles of the development of an “Agenda 21”. With the development of a National GeoPark, including the implementation of the concept and the solution of all problems that arise, three bodies were appointed: the Speakers' Council, the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board.

geology

Today's landscape in Northeast Brandenburg and thus also that of the Geopark "Eiszeitland am Oderrand" was glacially formed by the Scandinavian inland ice around 20,000 to 15,000 years ago in the Vistula Ice Age , the most recent of the glaciation phases that occurred in Northern and Central Europe . In this landscape, the variety of different glacial landscape forms is modeled. The four elements of the glacial series - ground moraine, terminal moraine, sand and glacial valley - are only completely preserved in this region and can be experienced over a distance of less than 15 km from the Thorn-Eberswalder glacial valley to the ground moraine in the backland of the Choriner terminal moraine arc. It is noteworthy that the Pomeranian Eisrandlage ran right through the core area of the Geopark with the current locations of Ringenwalde, Joachimsthal, Groß-Ziethen, Chorin and Liepe. Immediately at the end of the glacier, which stacked stones and blocks carried along by its enormous force in a very confined space, block end moraine packs can still be found today, e.g. B. in Sparrow Hostel. The density of terminal moraines between Chorin-Oderberg and Prenzlau (90 km distance) with a total of five terminal moraines can only be found in this area of the Pomeranian glaciation. In addition to the terminal moraine at the edge of the glacier, the ground moraine area in the Geopark also has a special feature: its rubble layer is not three to five meters thick on average, as in other regions, but more than 40 m in some places. The geopark also has special forms such as kames , oser and drumlins due to fluvial, glacial and aeolian processes .

tourism

In the core area there are 13 tourist points of contact, which bear witness to the diversity of the origins and development of the landscape. These contact points are called "landmarks" and are contact points for those interested in culture, nature and geology. These are existing tourist infrastructure or tourist offers, some of which could be included thematically in the Geopark concept through cooperation with local associations, institutions or private individuals, or they refer to geotouristic destinations in the area.

Landscape guides of the Geopark can tell interesting facts and historical facts about the Eberswalde glacial valley, the ice age, the lakes, the flora and fauna as well as natural events that can be seen during the hikes or bike tours. A permanent geopark exhibition is located in the information center of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve in Joachimsthal. A wide range of information about the Geopark and its actors as well as excerpts from the extensive fossil collection are exhibited here. There are a total of five geological nature trails in the Geopark, which in particular introduce visitors to the origin and diversity of the Nordic bed load, mostly boulders.

So-called ice age tours (hiking, cycling, water and motorcycle tours) have also been developed for tourists. The art and culture path Geopark was signposted and opened in August 2007 as a joint project of the Joachimsthal (Schorfheide) office, supported by the RFV eV and the Barnim culture track.
