The Geopark “Porphyry Land. Steinreich in Sachsen “ (Geopark Porphyrland for short) is a national geopark founded in 2006 and certified since 2014 in Germany and is located approx. 20 km east of Leipzig and approx. 70 km northwest of Dresden . The Geopark comprises areas of the North Saxon plateau and hill country , the central Saxon loess hill country and the Mulde loess hill country with a total area of ​​approx. 1,200 km². The region stretches from Thallwitz in the north via Wurzen , Grimma and Colditz to Rochlitz in the south. Wermsdorf and Mügeln mark the eastern border, Brandis and Naunhof form the western boundary of the Geopark area. The area includes parts of the districts of Leipzig , Northern Saxony and Central Saxony .

Regional geology

The Geopark Porphyrland is located in the area of ​​the Northwest Saxon volcanic complex. In the Rotliegend, about 300 to 275 million years ago, in the course of catastrophic super eruptions , caldera systems with several hundred meters thick ignimbritic deposits (trachy-) Dacitic to rhyolite composition emerged. In addition to these massive pyroclastic deposits, sub- volcanic rocks ( granite porphyries ) occur in these calderas . Rhyolitic to Rhyodacian lavas also occur subordinately in the north-west Saxon volcanic complex. The rocks (often summarized under the name “ porphyries ”) are stored discordantly above the Variscan folded subsoil and are consistently close to the surface. Deposits from the Zechstein and Mesozoic Era only play a subordinate role. The area was overprinted in the Tertiary and Quaternary periods .

The humid and warm climate in the late Cretaceous and at the beginning of the Tertiary period weathered the rhyolites close to the surface and originally formed kaolin ceilings up to 100 m thick .

During the Tertiary, between around 25 and 20 million years ago today, northwest Saxony was on the edge of the Paleo-North Sea, in which sands, silts and clays were deposited and lignite formed.

With the elevation of the Ore Mountains between the Plio and Pleistocene , fluvial processes and deposits formed the landscape.

The inland ice glaciers from the Elster and Saale Cold Ages caused a reshaping of the volcanic rocks and the tertiary overburden in the Quaternary. Today's hilly landscape was modeled during the change between warm and cold periods , when loose sediments such as gravel, sands and looseness were deposited. The discovery of the wind and glacier cuts on the porphyries in the Hohburg mountains were decisive for the formulation of the Ice Age theory.

Visitor Centers (Geoportals)

The visitor can access the sights of the Geopark via visitor centers, the so-called Geoportals. Here tourist information is kept ready and thematically different permanent exhibitions are offered.

  • Röcknitz Geoportal "Time - Change - Stone"
    In this geoportal an exhibition on the geological history of North Saxony can be viewed. Outside there is a geo-adventure garden with a barefoot path , stone labyrinth and a tertiary forest that takes up the geological themes in the permanent exhibition.
  • Geoportal Museum Steinarbeiterhaus Hohburg
    In the half-timbered building from 1802, the way of life of the stone breakers as well as the history of the north-west Saxon way of life of the stone industry are presented in exhibitions. Outside, a functioning stone crushing plant, locomobile, a Lanz Bulldog and a nostalgic gas station can be viewed.
  • Geoportal
    Porphyry
    House Rochlitzer Berg In the Porphyry House, visitors can find out more about Rochlitz porphyry tuff and take tips with them for excursions in the area. There are also lectures, workshops and creative offers.
  • Geoportal Erden der Keramik Grimma
    The geoportal is located in the "Schaddelmühle", an old watermill that houses a ceramic workshop. The geoportal offers ceramic art and other exhibitions, courses under professional supervision, a sculpture garden and a clay processing plant.
  • Geoportal Schmalspurbahnhof Mügeln (currently being implemented)
    In the narrow-gauge station Mügeln, once Europe's largest narrow-gauge station, information will be provided (from mid-2019) in an exhibition and on the outdoor area about the dismantling, transport and processing of kaolin.

The sights and visitor centers are accessible via (bike) hiking trails such as the “Stone Path” or the “Porphyry Educational Path” on the Rochlitzer Berg.
