geology

The Gleisbergbruch, a former quarry on Rochlitzer Berg

In later explosive eruptions of a volcano, the ash deposits formed the warm red Rochlitz porphyry . The term "porphyry" has been handed down historically, is generally used, but petrographically incorrect. The color of the rock is reddish to reddish purple, occasionally reddish brown to beige. Its structure appears grainy and is characterized by innumerable pore-like cavities (macropores). It is a tuff rock with rhyolitic rock fragments.

This tuff has been used extensively throughout the region for nearly a thousand years, including a. by master builders like Arnold von Westfalen or Hieronymus Lotter ; he had the Leipzig Old Town Hall and the Augustusburg built. In the recent past it was used to cover the Chemnitz town hall and the Peasants' War panorama near Bad Frankenhausen.

After up to ten individual businesses were previously active, the "United Porphyry Quarries on the Rochlitz Mountains" have been responsible for the economic mining of the rock since 1879, and since 1991 with blasting in the last quarry. For reasons of nature and landscape protection, the amount of mining is limited.

The porphyry tuff of the Rochlitz mountain was rated in May 2006 by the Hanover Academy of Geosciences as one of the 77 most important national geotopes in Germany. In 2012 the “Rochlitzer Porphyry” achieved 4th place in a vote initiated by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation for the most beautiful natural wonder in Germany.

Tourist development

View from the tower on Rochlitz

From a vantage point on the south side, you can see far across the country to Chemnitz and, in good weather, as far as the Fichtelberg .

A porphyry nature trail has been set up on and around the Rochlitzer Berg, which demonstrates and documents the history of stone mining. The path was laid out as a circular route and also offers insights into the former quarries up to 50 meters deep. A detour (approx. 3 km) to Rochlitz Castle is also worthwhile.

The "Königshöhe" memorial stone erected in 1815 by the quarry owner Seidel and other sponsors commemorates the return of King Friedrich August I of Saxony from Prussian captivity after the Battle of the Nations .

The "Friedrich-August-Turm", built in 1860, is located on the mountain, from which one has a very good view. The design of the tower comes from the famous Freiberg drawing teacher Eduard Heuchler and is dedicated to the Saxon King Friedrich August II, who died in an accident in 1854 . As station no. 17 Rochlitz , the tower was a first-order station of the royal Saxon triangulation in the 1860s . For this reason, a surveying column was built on the viewing platform, which has been preserved to the present day. In 2002, the “Türmerhaus” restaurant was rebuilt next to the tower. This can be reached by visitors via a short climb from the parking lot.

Events

Every year the event "Performance on the stone" takes place in one of the quarries. Performers are the Central Saxon Philharmonic and other ensembles with classical melodies and experimental pieces.

The VfA (Association for Endurance Sports) Rochlitzer Berg eV annually organizes the New Year's mountain run, on Sundays at the beginning of spring the spring mountain run over 3.5 and 10.5 km and on Sundays at the beginning of autumn the Rochlitzer mountain run over 3.5, 10.5 and 21 km.
