OutcropWizard (from "Outcrop" = information and "Wizard" = input assistant ) is a non-commercial application for Android devices. It is a mobile exploration database with geoscientific content. OutcropWizard is thus a scientific research collection . The aim of the app is to digitize information on geoscientific features in order to give users access to relevant data, to facilitate geological work in the field and to improve university teaching, for example planning excursions . The idea of OutcropWizard is based on a crowdsourcing approach; Every user can create, supplement and improve information in the app . OutcropWizard is aimed at both geoscientists and interested laypeople. The app thus serves both as a public relations medium and as a digital teaching and learning method. In particular, integrated learning at universities is promoted, as theoretical lecture content is linked to appropriate locations in the field and learners are enabled to visit these locations independently.

history

OutcropWizard is a project of the environmental geology working group of the Institute for Geosciences of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and was developed by Edouard Grigowski and Martin Monschau under the direction of Gösta Hoffmann. The project is funded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation , the German Geological Society and the ABC / J Geoverbund. There is a cooperation agreement between the University of Bonn and the UNESCO Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark . The digital information offer of the Geopark can be called up via OutcropWizard. In addition, the most important points in the area are marked with boards. Classic and digital ways of conveying information complement each other here.

The app first appeared in June 2017 for Android devices in the Google Play Store . A version for iOS devices was released as a public beta test in January 2020.

The app is used at various universities, u. a. RWTH Aachen University, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, University of Greifswald used as a means of digital teaching. The OutcropWizard team gave an invited plenary lecture at the Geoutrecht 2020 specialist conference. Furthermore, the development of the app was reported on at other specialist conferences.

Functions

Screenshot of the app

As a mobile digestion database, the app currently (as of 08.2020) contains around 7,000 digestions, most of them in Central Europe. The users can have the information displayed in the app on different maps, including satellite, standard and terrain maps as well as geological maps with legend function. Furthermore, a route guidance and navigation function enables the targeted control of exposure points.

Users can create their own digestions in the app. In addition, YouTube videos and 3D models can be integrated. A reporting system enables an evaluation and comment function as well as the correction of incorrect information. Excursions can be displayed as routes in the app. For example, the DGGV excursion to Albania is stored in the application. Using a PDF export function, details can be output formatted with the stored information.

OutcropWizard is currently available in German, English and French.

Awards

As part of the opening of the academic year, on October 18, 2019, the app was awarded the initiative prize “Impetus for digital-based teaching” from the University of Bonn. At RWTH Aachen University, the app received the Exploratory Teaching Space Award in 2019. In the summer of 2020, the OutcropWizard team took part in the “ MINTdigital - by far best studying ” competition advertised by the Stifterverband with a video contribution . Over 150 applications were submitted to the competition. The project "OutcropWizard - Digital on the move" was recognized by the jury as a flagship project for the use of opportunities in digital teaching and learning formats for the MINT study as a best practice project.
