German Geological Society - Geological Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Geological Society - Geological Association (DGGV) is the largest association of German geologists and other geoscientists . It was created in early 2015 when the German Society for Geosciences (founded in 1848/2004) and the Geological Association (1910) merged.

The DGGV is an international, non-profit geoscientific organization with more than 3,600 members from around 65 countries. Its main task is to promote the geosciences - especially geology - in research and teaching, in business and administration as well as the publication of scientific findings. The DGGV holds various honors and prizes for the recognition of excellent research work and good communication of the results.

It is an affiliate member of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and associated with the Geological Society of America (GSA). There is a cooperation agreement with the Professional Association of German Geoscientists (BDG).

Founding and merger history

The German Geological Society (DGG) was founded in 1848 as the oldest association of German geologists . In order to adequately represent other geoscientists, it united in 2004 with the Society for Geosciences (GGW) founded in 1954 to form the German Society for Geosciences, also abbreviated as DGG. On January 1, 2015, the German Society for Geosciences joined the Geological Association founded in 1910 to the German Geological Society - Geological Association e. V. (DGGV) together.

Structure since 2016

Since the first annual meeting , the society has been led by the Presidium, the Board of Directors and an Advisory Board, whose members come from universities and research institutes, as well as from business and geological services . The interests of the student members are represented by an advisory board member chosen by them.

A number of specialist sections are associated with or affiliated with the DGGV .

Current presidents are Jan Behrmann (Geomar, Kiel), Bernhard Fügenschuh (Inst. F. Geology, Univ. Innsbruck), Jürgen Grötsch (Shell Global Sol., Rijswijk) and Gernold Zulauf (Institute f. Geowiss., Univ. Frankfurt). Treasurer and management: Heinz-Gerd Röhling (LBEG, Hanover)

Further tasks of the company

In addition to the main objectives mentioned above, the DGGV has committed itself to further tasks:

  • Offering geoscientific expertise for public and economic issues
  • international cooperation between scientific organizations, institutes and associations
  • Exchange of ideas between young and experienced geoscientists, especially through
  • Scholarships for talented young scientists from all areas of geology
  • Annual research prizes and awards from the society and its foundations
  • Statements on problems and changes in the geosciences, also in cooperation with the Professional Association of German Geoscientists (BDG).

Library and archive

The society maintains - also through its predecessor organizations - a close cooperation with the geological archive at the Freiburg University Library . It is fed from the holdings of DGGC members and, in addition to general content, is a treasure trove for the history of geology . The archive was handed over to the university in 1972 and has since tripled to over 100,000 documents, including biographies of nearly 3,000 geologists. They are accessible via an information and search system.
