International Union of Geological Sciences
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) is an international geological society.
The IUGS was founded in Paris in March 1961. Any geoscientist can become a member through membership in a national geoscientific society. It sponsors and coordinates the International Geological Congress , which takes place every four years . In order to promote direct collaboration between scientists from different nations, the IUGS founded the International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP) in 1972 (since 2003 the International Geoscience Program ). Since 1972, 572 individual programs have received financial support.
The association is a member of the International Council for Science .
IUGS and UNESCO initiated the International Year of Planet Earth 2008.
