action

Act I - Living together with a woman who is not soulmate

In Los Angeles David living is for five years with his girlfriend Sarah together. She urges him to finally marry her. Otherwise, she would take a job in New York City and leave it. He has to decide during a two-month trial period.

Despite the good relationship, he hesitates to marry her because he misses the feeling of soulmate. He remembers Julie, whom he met at an airport when he was 17 and whom he instantly fell in love with. The subsequent correspondence with intimate content was ended by her father and the police when it turned out that she was only eleven years old. In a café, David notices a woman to whom he immediately feels strongly drawn again, but whom he cannot address in time.

II. Act - The search for the soul mate woman

His girlfriend allows him to meet other women. She thinks he just has to let off steam and then would want to marry her. David posts a personal ad looking for a soul mate.

When David visits the café again, he misses the woman again. But he sees that she has circled his personal ad in her newspaper. He invites several callers to a hotel bar at the same time.

At the meeting point, he can be denied because the expected woman is not there.

By an unfortunate coincidence it turns out that he invited all four women. They then beat him up. When the expected woman arrives and learns of the commotion at reception, she drives away without having seen him. Sarah's employer is very satisfied with her performance and offers her a better job at short notice. That's why she demands a last-minute decision from her boyfriend and flies back to Los Angeles.

A friend sends David an invitation to his wedding. He wants to marry David's vacation sweetheart Julie in New York. When Sarah arrives at the airport, he breaks up with her and flies to the wedding.

III. Act - Finding the soul mate woman

Julie doesn't recognize him. It turns out that David only scared her back then and her nine-year-old sister Katie wrote the letters. Katie, in her opinion, would not have had a relationship as she would have been severely traumatized by the correspondence.

David ceases to believe in the existence of a soul mate and lets Julie marry his friend.

At the wedding he meets Sarah again, who has found a new, more attractive love at first sight in New York. It turns out that Katie is the woman from the cafe. David follows her taxi and takes a shortcut through the woods. He can stop the taxi by jumping on it.

Katie and David immediately kiss and drive to the hospital because of his injuries.

Reviews

Kevin Laforest wrote in the Apollo Movie Guide that the film mixes the subgenres of "childish" sex comedies and romantic comedies. Sometimes it works like in the comedy Crazy About Mary ; In contrast to the first-mentioned film, the wedding trap appears “idiot” and at the same time “repulsive”. The critic suspected that the writers would have wanted to appeal to everyone, but would not satisfy anyone. The film “mocks” homosexual people in an uncomfortable sub-strand of the plot.

Rotten Tomatoes wrote that the film was funny and offered a hearty take on life and love. The “bright” young actors would play with commitment.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a “comedy about likeable people in their mid-twenties who try to find their way, but because of their indecision keep putting obstacles in their way”.

background

The film was shot in Los Angeles .
