The Mehlemer Bach is a 10.6 km long orographically left tributary of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . The sections in the upper reaches are also called Eichenackersbach (10.6–6.7 km) and Züllighovener Bach (6.7–5.1 km).

geography

The Mehlemer Bach rises as Eichenackersbach west of Wachtberg - Werthhoven at an altitude of 253  m above sea level. NHN . From here the stream flows east through Werthhoven (partly piped) and crosses under the district road 58. After a short run it reaches the border of Rhineland-Palatinate, runs a short distance along it and passes the village of Oedingen . The brook then swings to the north, passing the district of Züllighoven . The Sprüsselbach or Kernbach flows north of Züllighoven , from there the water is called Züllighovener Bach. The Goldbach flows before Kürrighoven . The Züllighovener Bach passes Kürrighoven in the east and joins the Berkumer Bach in Oberbachem . From there it flows to the northeast as Mehlemer Bach through Niederbachem . The Mehlemer Bach reaches the Bonn city limits in the Bad Godesberg district , flows through the Mehlem district (partially piped since 1904) and flows into the Rhine at river kilometer 644.07 .

The 17.9 km² catchment area ( Drachenfelser Ländchen ) drains over the Rhine to the North Sea . The most important tributaries are the Berkumer Bach and the Goldbach.

Flood risk

Construction site of the relief canal in Drachenstein Park (December 2016)

The Mehlemer Bach regularly floods in heavy rain and, along with the surrounding area, is one of the flood areas designated by the Cologne District Government. Catastrophic floods, especially in the lower reaches, occurred on July 3, 2010, June 20, 2013 and most recently on June 4, 2016.

In order to improve flood protection on the Mehlemer Bach, an approx. 1050 m long relief canal has been built from the banks of the Rhine at Drachensteinpark to Bachemer Straße since November 10, 2015. The project should be completed in 2019 [obsolete] . The costs rose from around 8.3 to an estimated 10 million euros.
