Karl Doehring

Karl Doehring (born March 17, 1919 in Berlin ; † March 24, 2011 in Heidelberg ) was a German legal scholar . He was a student of the Heidelberg university professor Ernst Forsthoff .

After doing military service and being a prisoner of war, Doehring studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He taught in Göttingen and Munich . Afterwards he was director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law as well as professor for German and foreign public law and international law at the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg. He was an honorary member of the Institut de Droit international , the Academia Mexicana de Derecho Internacional, and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . He received honorary doctorates from the universities of Johannesburg , Bucharest and Saarbrücken .

Doehring has comprehensively in the areas of State published and of international law. The focus was on a. the legal position of Germany after the Second World War , the right of peoples to self-determination , human rights , the law of aliens and the right of asylum , the contribution of international law to peace, the prohibition of violence , the function of the United Nations, claims for reparations under international law and customary international law . His best-known works include the books Völkerrecht (2nd edition 2004) and Allgemeine Staatslehre (3rd edition 2004).

On his 70th birthday, his students Kay Hailbronner , Georg Ress and Torsten Stein dedicated a commemorative publication entitled “State and International Law” to him. Other students of Doehring are Juliane Kokott , Rudolf Dolzer and Matthias Herdegen .
