history

In 1382 the village Gerbetzroyde or Gerbätzräude (derived from the personal name Gerbrecht, so "clearing of Gerbrecht") to the Archbishop of Cologne , Friedrich III. from Saar Werden , ceded. History shows that in 1794 the Austrians at Girbelsrath were defeated by the attacking French .

Until 1794 Girbelsrath belonged to the Dingstuhl and Hambach court , an important place in the Nörvenich office .

In Girbelsrath a brisk commercial life has developed due to the designation of industrial sites. A total of around 600 jobs have been created since the early 1970s. The most recent settlement is probably the most modern and at the same time one of the largest canning companies in the Federal Republic, the company J. & W. Stollenwerk OHG. The development of the population in this part of the town, which can be determined by the designation of building plots, is keeping pace with this upward trend.

It is worth mentioning here that the former mayor Matthias von den Driesch donated most of his fortune to the community in a will with the condition that the proceeds be used for Girbelsrath residents to promote social and cultural affairs.

On July 1, 1969 Girbelsrath was incorporated into Merzenich.

Catholic Parish Church of St. Amandus

The church was built in 1883 by the Cologne builder Lange. A chapel stood on this site as early as 1553 . In 1849 Girbelsrath became its own parish . As a result of the merging of the parishes of the Merzenich community in 2016, Girbelsrath had to give up its status as an independent parish.

Former school

Right next to the church is the former school yard , which is also adjacent to the rectory and cemetery . In the former school building there is now a kindergarten with two groups.

Economy and Infrastructure

Infrastructure

In the village there is the day care center "Villa Wichtel", two restaurants and a kiosk. After many years without a fire brigade, a fire station was inaugurated for the newly founded fire brigade in September 2016.

economy

The Merzenich community has set up an industrial park in the Girbelsrath district. This is dominated by the canning factory J. & W. Stollenwerk OHG .

The company GMS Günter Meyer Gesellschaft für Fahrbahnsanierungen is also known nationwide .

The company M. Schall GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1956 by Matthias sound in Merzenich. In the early days, the company mainly produced truck tarpaulins and event tents .

In 1984 a new line of business was founded with the manufacture of half cabs for forklifts and other industrial trucks . In 1993, the production of mobile work rooms in sandwich construction followed, which are used, for example, as modular medical equipment . Over the years, a number of patents have been generated in all business areas . The company's expansion at the Merzenich location was limited due to its location near the center of the village, so a second plant was built in the Girbelsrath industrial park. Alongside the Stollenwerk company, M. Schall GmbH & Co. KG is one of the largest companies based in the Merzenich community. In total, M. Schall GmbH & Co. KG currently employs around 120 people at both locations. Today the products are sold worldwide. The company, which is still 100% family-owned, traditionally does not publish sales figures.

Electricity, gas, water

The water supply association of the Neffeltalgemeinden supplies water from Vettweiß . Gas and electricity can be obtained from several providers.

traffic

From 1908 to 1963 the Girbelsrath station was located on the small railway line Distelrath - Nörvenich - Zülpich district station - Zülpich city - Embken of the Düren district railway .

Today the place is approached by buses of the Düren district railway .

The S-Bahn connection ( Herchen / Au (Sieg) - Düren ) is about four kilometers away in Merzenich.

The Merzenich junction of the BAB 4 has been around five kilometers away since September 20, 2014 .
