Until February 12, 1849 Girbelsrath was a branch of the parish St. Laurentius in Merzenich. On this day Girbelsrath was raised to an independent parish and the church to the parish church . On January 1, 2016, the parish was dissolved and incorporated into the Merzenich parish as a branch. Since then the church has been a branch church of this parish.

The church was built in 1883/84 according to the plans of the Cologne architect August Carl Lange in the neo-Romanesque style. A previous church is attested to as early as 1553. In 1986 the organ , which has seven registers, was restored by the Weimbs company.
