St. Gregorius in Golzheim

St. Gregorius is the Roman Catholic branch church in the Merzenich district of Golzheim in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The structure is entered under No. 10 in the list of architectural monuments in Merzenich .

history

The church was built from 1896 to 1897 in neo -Gothic style according to plans by the Bonn church builder Johann Adam Rüppel . The new building had become necessary because the previous parish church was destroyed by fire in 1895. The solemn consecration took place five years after the completion of the church on June 10, 1902 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop and later archbishop Antonius Fischer . At the same time the high altar was consecrated and in it relics of St. Paulinus , St. Gereon and St. Ursula was used, who Auxiliary Bishop Fischer had brought from Cologne.

The 33 meter high pointed spire fell onto the nave on December 28, 1945 as a result of the damage of the Second World War. A much smaller point later took its place.

In Golzheim there was already a church before this church building, which stood in today's cemetery. The tower has been preserved from this church and serves as a war memorial.

In 1989/90 the church was renovated. The post-war floor was removed and replaced with a new one based on the original paving. In addition to the floor, new benches in neo-Gothic style and a new altar have been purchased.

On January 1, 2016, the previously independent parish was dissolved and incorporated into the Merzenich parish of St. Laurentius. Since then, St. Gregorius is no longer a parish church , but a subsidiary church.

Building description

St. Gregorius is a three-aisled hall church made of brick in the neo-Gothic style with a four-storey bell tower in front , a two-bay nave with two windows per bay on each side, a slightly protruding transept and a single - bay and five-sided closed choir in the east. The ribbed vaults rest on round pillars.

Furnishing

Most of the stained glass windows date from the time the church was built, which is a rarity in this area, as the windows in most of the churches were destroyed in the Second World War. The windows in the choir are works by the artist Josef Strater from 1959. The mosaics come from the Freiburg artist Angelika Khan-Leonhard. The Way of the Cross and the baptismal font are works from 1961.
