The power plant Luenen mute harbor is a coal-fired power plant in Lüner district Lippholthausen in the district of Unna .

In addition to the two existing power plants at the time, the Lünen power plant and the Lünen biomass power plant , Trianel Energie built a new hard coal power plant at the Stummhafen in Lünen. The official start of construction was September 3, 2008; Christa Thoben (NRW Minister for Economic Affairs from 2005 to 2009 ) broke ground . Trianel Energie invested around 1.4 billion euros together with 30 other municipal utilities. The power plant has a nominal output of 750 MW and was officially commissioned in December 2013. Due to changed market conditions, the operators expected a loss of around EUR 100 million in the 2014 operating year. At the celebrations that took place to mark the start of construction, there were demonstrations by opponents of the power plant.

The Swiss Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) is one of the minority owners . This commitment of around 24 million euros by the company, which is 100% owned by the Canton of Ticino , led to a public discussion and ultimately to a referendum; in this the commitment was confirmed.

In December 2011, the Higher Administrative Court for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia temporarily revoked the preliminary ruling under immission control law on the operation of the power plant after a complaint by the BUND .

The Lünen-Stummhafen power plant has no chimney. The exhaust gases are directed outside through the 160 meter high cooling tower. The cooling water is taken from the Datteln-Hamm Canal and some of it is released into the Lippe after use . In addition to electrical energy, the power plant also provides district heating with an output of 35 MW.

While Trianel owns the power plant, it is operated by Steag .
