The Cornell Farm is a farm from the 19th century in the town of Dartmouth in the state of Massachusetts of the United States , which is still in operation today. Most of the property belonging to the company has formed a 130 acres (0.5  km² ) nature reserve since 2009  , which is managed by the organization The Trustees of Reservations .

history

Abraham Cornell bought the first parcel of what would later become the farm in 1844 after selling his inherited property on Buzzards Bay . The farm quickly became an important utility for the surrounding region and a major supplier to a local dairy .

In 2009, much of the farm's land was sold by the Cornell family for protection. The Trustees of Reservations worked with the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust and the family on appropriate plans. The establishment of the sanctuary was made possible through financial support from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the City of Dartmouth, whose funds acted as a catalyst for complementary donations from private individuals and the Pew Charitable Trust .

Protected area

The unique combination of cultivated highlands , mixed forest and pristine marshland , which is connected to Buzzards Bay by a narrow stream, was farmed and cared for by the Cornell family for more than 150 years. The deep closeness to nature of the family meant that the landscape kept its character and in 2009 it was possible to designate an official protected area, so that the preservation is also secured for the future.

The farm continues to be productive and focuses on ecological agriculture , but also serves for recreation and further information for visitors, who can understand all processes from sowing to harvest.
