Christa Thoben (* 1. August 1941 in Dortmund ) is a German politician of the CDU .

Life

From 1961 to 1966 she studied economics at the Universities of Münster , Vienna and Innsbruck . After working as a scientific consultant at the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung in Essen for twelve years from 1966 , in 1978 she became managing director of the Münster Chamber of Commerce and Industry for two years .

In 1970 Thoben joined the CDU and from 1977 became deputy chairwoman of the CDU district association in Bochum . In 1980 she was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament for the CDU ; there she took over the offices of deputy parliamentary group leader and economic policy spokeswoman for the CDU parliamentary group . From 1983 to 1987 Thoben was also deputy chairwoman of the CDU district association Westphalia-Lippe and from 1985 to 2000 a member of the federal executive committee of the CDU. In 1989 she was elected deputy federal chairman of the CDU. She has been a member of the CDU Presidium since 1990. Also in 1990 she resigned from the state parliament and became general manager of the Münster Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In 1995 she returned to politics and until 1998 worked as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development . From 1999 to 2000 Thoben was Berlin's mayor and senator for science, research and culture. From October 2004 to February 2005 she was in charge of establishing the Ruhr Regional Association as the successor to the Ruhr Area Municipal Association. From 2005 to 2010 she was Minister for Economic Affairs, SMEs and Energy for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . The CDU's regional treasurer lives in Bochum- Wattenscheid .

Honor

On August 24, 2012 Thoben was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
