history

As in the Koblenz city forest, a Celtic and Roman settlement is assumed in the Kondertal. Archaeological research uncovered the remains of a hilltop castle in an inaccessible hillside location; Reconstruction attempts with the help of generative modeling were undertaken at the University of Koblenz . Lead and silver ores were mined in the Kondertal until the 20th century; mining may go back to ancient times. In the Middle Ages, three mills were operated in the lower Kondertal (mentioned in 1429), whose ownership changed and which were temporarily pledged to the Mariaroth Monastery, which no longer exists. The former function can still be clearly seen on the lowest mill building at the confluence with the Moselle (called Schmitzemühle since 1822).

The Kondertal with its tributaries is today a local recreation and hiking area as well as a meeting point for archaeological excursions. The quiet forest landscape on the streams between mossy slate rocks, accessible on paths with several stream crossings over old wooden bridges, gives the area a natural, romantic character.

Infrastructure

Bodewig oak

State road 208 runs through the Kondertal between Dieblich and Waldesch.

At the same time, it can be accessed from Waldesch and Remsteck via various hiking trails along the Remsteck Bach and Eschbach.

In the lower Kondertal, the so-called Bodewig oak is dedicated to the Lahnstein teacher and local researcher (1857–1923) who located numerous Roman relics in the Koblenz city forest around the turn of the century, including the Villa Rustica on Remeckt and the remains of the Mercurius temple on the Pastors Path .

On the last kilometer before the confluence, the Konderbach is lined with a few houses and a hotel before it reaches the Schmitzemühle.
