Robert Bodewig, who came from a humble background, worked as an elementary teacher in Remscheid from 1878 to 1881 and graduated from high school in Barmen in 1882 . He then studied history, geography, Latin and Greek, first from the summer semester 1882 to the winter semester 1884/1885 in Berlin, then from the summer semester 1885 to the winter semester 1885/1886 in Münster, where he passed the first teaching qualification in 1886. In the same year he began a trial year at the high school Barmen and graduated at the Academy Münster Dr. phil. In 1887 he became a teacher at the secondary school for girls in Unterbarmen . The year 1888 saw him as the founding rector of the higher boys' school in Bünde , today's Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium . In 1890 he moved to Oberlahnstein and was initially an assistant teacher at the Realprogymnasium there. Just one year later, he advanced to the position of senior teacher there. He held this position until his retirement at the beginning of 1923. In 1906 he was appointed "Council IV Class" and professor. In 1914 he was awarded the "Red Eagle Order IV Class". From 1921 to 1922 he was acting headmaster of the Oberlahnsteiner Gymnasium.

In 1897 Bodewig was appointed route commissioner of the Reich Limes Commission by ministerial decree . As such, he was responsible for the local excavation management of the forts Hunzel , Heddesdorf , Marienfels and Ems as well as the small forts Becheln and Pohl . In addition, he examined and published the Roman road network in the area between the Lahn and Aar in the Limeswerk . On " Winckelmannstag " (December 9th) 1899 he was appointed a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

In 1904 Bodewig became chairman of the Lahnsteiner Altertumsverein, of which he had been a member since 1894 as secretary and secretary. He held this office until his death. Bodewig's finds formed the basis of the collections of the Lahnsteiner Altertumsverein and thus the local history museum for Oberlahnstein and the St. Goarshausen district founded in 1914 . The museum was closed in 1945, but continued in the Museum of the City of Lahnstein in the Hexenturm, which opened in 1965 .

Robert Bodewig died on December 3, 1923 at the age of 66 in Oberlahnstein, three days after his 66th birthday. In 1969 the city of Oberlahnstein named a street in the village after Robert Bodewig.
