Unterbarmen is a historic part of the old town of Barmen . It corresponds to the south-western area of today's Wuppertal district of Barmen , for example the quarters Friedrich-Engels-Allee , Loh , Clausen , Rott , Kothen , Hesselnberg and Lichtenplatz (which was also called Hochbarmen ).

The division of Barmen into Ober- and Unterbarmen is based on ecclesiastical boundaries: Before the Reformation there was no parish of its own in the Barmen area, the area west of the Alter Markt belonged to the parish of Elberfeld in the dean's office in Neuss, the area of Barmen-Gemarke and further east to the parish Schwelm in the dean's office in Lüdenscheid. The creeks Leimbach north and Fischertaler Bach south of the Wupper formed the border. This division was also retained when the parishes around the Wichlinghauser Church and the Old Church of Wupperfeld were founded, which were independent of Schwelm . It was not until 1822 that the United Evangelical Church Community of Unterbarmen was formed as the first united community in the Wuppertal, whose community boundaries still correspond to the old border with Oberbarmen . In the 19th century, the initially sparsely populated Unterbarmen was built more and more around the Unterbarmer Church, which was completed in 1832 and closed the urban development gap between Elberfeld and Barmen by around 1900. Numerous slate-clad houses along today's Friedrich-Engels-Allee and other classicist buildings in Wuppertal have survived from this period . Friedrich Engels , whose father of the same name played a key role in founding the Unterbarmer community, was born near today's Museum for Early Industrialization .

After the formation of the city of Wuppertal in 1929, Unterbarmen was merged with the district, the historical center of Barmen, Sedansberg and Hatzfeld , which were populated after 1900, to form the city district of Barmen. There is no political unit of Unterbarmen. Nevertheless, the name is still used for the area and used to designate buildings and facilities, such as in the case of the Unterbarmer cemetery , the Unterbarmer main church or the Unterbarmen train station on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line .
