The Fischertaler Bach

The Fischertaler Bach is a 1.254 km long brook in the Wuppertal district of Barmen . The brook, a tributary of the Wupper , is also the namesake for a street called Fischertal .

etymology

The etymological origin of the Fischertaler Bach comes from the Fischer family. The cotton manufacturer and banker Johann Wilhelm Fischer (1779–1845) settled there with his family. In 1847, his family and the city financed the construction of the dirt path to a street. Since then, the road, valley and stream have borne the family's name.

An older name was Klever Bach. The name is derived from the Kleff court, first mentioned in 1466, at the confluence of the stream in the Wupper; today the location is called Cleff. The footpath was named "Reuters Kleverweg" after the local Reuter family.

topography

The stream rises around 319 meters above sea level around 20 meters west of a clearing in the Barmer Forest and then flows northwards down the valley. Above a tennis court, the brook swings in a north-easterly direction. The Fischertal estate with a quarry was located here on the grounds of the tennis court . The Fischertal dairy was located here until the Second World War .

After about 350 meters from the source, the stream crosses under Obere Lichtenplatzer Straße in a northerly direction and meets another 30 meters on Fischertal street , which winds up in a serpentine to Obere Lichtenplatzer Straße . Here the creek can also be seen clearly from the road that leads through a wooded area.

After around 480 meters from the source, the brook continues piped under the Fischertal street , which is further built on with residential houses. The Fischertaler Bach no longer rises to the surface and flows exactly below the Alter Markt traffic junction at around 156 meters above sea level.

The brook as a historical borderline

In the Middle Ages, the border of the electoral Cologne (later Brandenburg ) parish of Schwelm ran along the stream , which separated it from the Bergish parish of Elberfeld . At the same time, this border separated the deanery Lüdenscheid from the deanery Deutz and the two Gogerichtsbezirke Schwelm and Elberfeld. This border still exists today in the dividing line between Oberbarmen and Unterbarmen (Niederbarmen). This border was secured in the late Middle Ages by a Landwehr that ran from Horath via Hatzfeld, along the Leimbach and Fischertaler Bach brooks and over the Scharpenacker Berg past Laaken to Beyenburg Castle .
