Johann Daniel Hardt (born May 8, 1696 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 9, 1763 in Stuttgart ) was a German gambist and composer .

Life

Hardt is first documented as a viol player in 1714 in Strasbourg . After about five years as a chamber musician and part-time treasurer at the court of Stanislaus I in the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , he became gambist in the chapel of Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn in Würzburg . After his death in 1724 the chapel was closed. In 1725 Hardt found a job at the Württemberg court orchestra. First he was gambist, then concertmaster under Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello . In the years of the guardianship of the guardian administrator Karl Friedrich for the youthful Duke Carl Eugen , he was first chief concertmaster from 1738, in 1746 he was promoted to second conductor . In this position he worked with Ignaz Holzbauer and Niccolò Jomelli . In 1755 he was retired.

Hardt's compositional work is only preserved in a few works; it is mainly written for the viola da gamba , especially for the treble viol, which Hardt treats in a technically and compositionally demanding manner. His compositions show that he was one of the most valued virtuosos of the 18th century.
