Mellen is in northern Wisconsin, on both sides of the Bad River . The river flows about 30 km to the north into the Upper Lake , the largest of the five Great Lakes . The geographical coordinates of Mellen are 46 ° 19'32 "north latitude and 90 ° 39'40" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 4.84 km².
The Copper Falls State Park area begins about 2 miles north . A few kilometers south, southwest and west is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest .
