The Copper Falls State Park is a 12.4 km² large State Park . It is located about 3 km northeast of Mellen in Ashland County in the US state of Wisconsin and is accessible via Wisconsin Highway 169 . In the master plan of 1975, annual visitor numbers of 208,000 people were given for the park.
The state park was established in 1929. Most of the infrastructure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Projects Administration in the 1930s, including the network of trails, bridges, huts, and covered picnic areas. A flood caused major damage in 1946, two suspension bridges and a bathing beach and bathing house were destroyed. In addition to a circular hiking trail through the recreation area, the North Country National Scenic Trail from North Dakota to New York also crosses the area. Depending on the time of year, the paths can also be used by bike, skis and snowmobiles.
The park is traversed by the Bad River and the Tyler Forks , which form rapids and waterfalls such as the 9 m high Brownstone Falls and the 6 m high Copper Falls . Over the millennia, erosion of the white water exposed several geological layers in the gorges, including sandstone, lava, granite and old sedimentary soils from seas long past.
