history

The 200 m high sandstone cliffs are over 400 million years old. The first humans appeared in the area 11,000 years ago. Settlement traces, mounds and artifacts can be assigned to the pre-Columbian Red Ocher People, the Hopewell culture and the Effigy Mounds culture of the Woodland period . A total of at least 14 tribes were temporarily or permanently to be found in the region until the arrival of the Europeans. The oldest records of Europeans are from June 17, 1763 by Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet . They were followed by French, British and later American fur traders as well as gold diggers, farmers and settlers.

At the beginning of the 20th century, plans matured to convert the site into a state park. The then owners of Robert Glenn's family conducted negotiations and in 1912 the land was transferred and the State Park opened in 1917. Initially under the name Nelson Dewey State Park , it was later renamed Wyalusing State Park , where Wyalusing means home of the warrior in the Munsee-Delaware language .

In the meantime, the state park has been expanded again and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources .
