The Blue Mounds State Park is a State Park in the counties of Iowa and Dane near the place Blue Mounds in the US state of Wisconsin .
geography
It is bounded in the north by the valley of the Wisconsin River and the Baraboo Range , in the west and south by the Driftless Area and the city of Madison in the east.
geology
The state park was named after the mountain West Blue Mound (523 m) and consists of dolomite . The Inselberg was created by the erosion of the surrounding softer rock.
fauna
In addition to the largest living in a state park mammal, the white-tailed deer , there are also thirteen stripes ground squirrel , fox , gray and chipmunks and woodchucks and raccoons . Cottontail rabbits , flying squirrels , bats , coyotes , possums , prairie mole crickets , skunks and weasels as well as red and gray foxes are rarer . There are also various types of mice ( house mouse , jumping mice , shrews , white-footed mice , meadow vole and harvest mouse ). Badgers are also sometimes found in the state park .
During the last Ice Age mastodons were found, which were hunted by Paleo-Indians . Before the European colonization, this area also had bison , fishing marten , Canadian lynx , puma , bobcat , black bear , elk and wolves .

Various flowers bloom in Blue Mound State Park from April to June, such as Arisaema triphyllum , dodecatheon , strawberry , geranium maculatum , buttercup , dogwood , hooded heart flower , cherries , liverwort , Sanguinaria canadensis , shield-shaped footplate , violet and anemone .
In spring, the American white oak , the red oak and the flaky bark hickory also bloom . On the north and east sides of the park, the flowers usually bloom two weeks later because of the cooler and more humid microclimate . Borage , ferns and blueberries feel at home in this climate .
There are also the following plants: yellow lady's slipper , forest lilies and wild ginger . From July to autumn, on the other hand, in the hickory and oak forests on the north side, Desmodium , witch's herbs , burdock , ormennige , sweet umbels bloom . From July to September, in addition to various types of grass, asters , streaky siliphia , goldenrod , compass plants and splendid slits bloom .
Hiking trails
In addition to the State Park's Military Ridge State Trail , which runs from Fitchburg to Mineral Point , there are an additional 20.8 kilometers of hiking trails .
