The Big Bay State Park is located on Madeline Iceland , the largest island of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior . The park and island administratively belong to Ashland County in the US state of Wisconsin .
The park is open all year round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Between April and December, La Pointe on Madeline Island can be reached by a 25-minute ferry ride from Bayfield on the mainland . The state park has picnic areas, a campground, a 1.5 mile beach, a 2 km boardwalk, and more than 6 miles of hiking and walking trails.
geology
The Apostle Islands were formed more than 600 million years ago when sediments settled in the Upper Lake. Between 100,000 and 15,000 years ago, Madeleine Island was covered by glaciers.
