The Brunet Island State Park [ ˈbruːneɪ ] is a state park in Chippewa County in the US state of Wisconsin . It is located on the river island of the same name in the Chippewa River at the confluence of the Fisher River . The state park is north of the city of Cornell .
history
In 1936, the Northern States Power Company donated Brunet Island to the State of Wisconsin. The state park was established in 1940 in honor of Jean Brunet. In 1938 a refuge was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps , which was renovated in 2003. In 1970 and 1977 the state park was hit by two tornadoes.
fauna
There is an overpopulation of white-tailed deer and grouse in the state park . There are also squirrels , foxes , porcupines , skunks , chipmunks , woodchucks and raccoons . Beavers , muskrats , minks and otters live in the water . Ospreys and bald eagles as well as owls and great blue herons are bird species .
flora
Canadian hemlocks are found in the state park . The area, which was devastated by a tornado in 1977 , is now planted with birch , oak and aspens . There are also various wildflowers, ferns , mosses and lichens as well as club moss plants and berries .
