Amnicon Falls State Park is located southeast of the city of Superior at the waterfalls of the Amnicon River .
geography
In the state park , the river divides into three arms with islands between them . These arms of the river have three different waterfalls :
- Now and Then Falls
- Upper Fals
- Snake Pit Falls
geology
There were several earthquakes along the Douglas Fault half a billion years ago . Lava leaked a billion years ago and later solidified into dark basalt . At the Lower Falls, there are sandstones made up of sediments from prehistoric rivers. There are sandstone cliffs in some places. During the last ice age, the Canadian shield brought various other rocks such as granite or gneiss .
history
In 1932, Douglas County bought 60 acres and received another 65 acres as a gift. Bardon Park was founded out of the country . Between the 1930s and 1940s, the park was given to Amnicon . During this time people from the Civilian Conservation Corps took care of the park. It then grew to 160 acres and grew in popularity, increasing maintenance costs and returning the state park to the county. In 1961 the shape was changed to a state park and given its current name. Later the park grew to its present size.
Flora and fauna
A variety of mammals such as deer , coyotes , foxes , raccoons, and porcupines are found in the state park . Minks and otters also live along the river . There are also various species of birds such as B. collar hens .
The plant species include Nutka raspberries ( Rubus nutkanus ) and various types of mushrooms.
