Practice What You Preach (English: "Do what you preach") is the third studio album by the US thrash metal band Testament . It was released on Megaforce Records in August 1989 . The music on the album was overall powerful and aggressive, but sometimes a little slower and more technical than on the two previous releases, with The Ballad , for which a video was filmed in addition to the title track and Greenhouse Effect, also contained a semi-ballad .

History of origin

After the long tour activities for the album The New Order , Testament was particularly focused on the recording of the following record. This time, in the spring of 1989, the Fantasy Studio in Berkeley , California , was booked with producer Alex Perialas , where the record was recorded live. Michael Rosen , who then produced the next album Souls of Black in 1990 , acted as the "assistant" sound engineer . The video shot for The Ballad was not infrequently seen on MTV , after a comparable semi-ballad found its way onto music television in January 1989 with Metallicas One from the album … And Justice for All, which was released the previous year . A successful US headlining tour with Savatage and Wratchild America followed . The European tour with Mortal Sin in early 1990, however, was a little less popular.

Texts

More than on the previous albums, where more occult and were to be found fantasy lyrics, the lyrics to include Practice What You Preach often political and environmental issues, the latter is at Greenhouse Effect ( greenhouse effect ) the case.

reception

Some reviewers have made comparisons with Metallica's development on ... And Justice For All at the time of publication . Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard compared the guitar work with the Metallicas. Even Chuck Billy's singing was that of James Hetfield similar, this looked Kühnemund as positive. He rated the record stronger than The New Order , described it as a “flawless speed / thrash album” despite the ballad and awarded it nine out of ten points. Allmusic's Alex Henderson wrote that despite the changed lyrics, the musical approach is very similar to that of the previous albums. He awarded three out of five points. In contrast, Practice What You Preach was recognized as a "timeless and progressive (!) Sound document" on www.bloodchamber.de. Even after twenty years, “'Practice ...' is still fresh and lively.” Assumptions that Testament had become more commercial at this time and wanted to “jump on the Metallica bandwagon” are not justified because the “heavy thrash sound” "Apart from The Ballad " is "absolutely not mass-compatible". The rating was nine out of ten.
