The New Order is the second studio album by the American thrash metal band Testament . It was released on Megaforce Records in May 1988 . Musically similar to its predecessor, it contained Hypnosis , for which samples of a thunderstorm were used, and Musical Death (A Dirge) for the first time two calm instrumentals. It was the first Testament album to hit the charts in the US, UK and Germany .

History of origin

After the highly acclaimed debut The Legacy and the live record Live at Eindhoven , which was released in autumn 1987 , Testament went back to the Pyramid Sound Studios in Ithaca , NY at the end of 1987 to record the successor. Therefore the band only had a short songwriting phase. The album was produced and mixed by Alex Perialas until the beginning of 1988 . With Reign of Terror , an eleventh song was recorded that did not make it on the album. He was guitarist Alex Skolnick too hard and was only used after his exit on the EP Return to the Apocalyptic City (1993). To Trial by Fire , along with The Preacher one of the singles, and the Aerosmith -Cover Nobody's Fault were filmed music videos. The May release was followed by a world tour, including a. with Megadeth , which for the first time also included appearances in South America .

reception

Although the album "in itself" was "certainly not much worse" than The Legacy , Holger Stratmann from Rock Hard criticized that the season was "filled up" with instrumental pieces. The similarities to the predecessor were also rated negatively. Nevertheless, it is about "first-class, high-quality Thrash" with "mega-hard, precise riffs ", a "strong performance" by Alex Skolnick and an improved drum sound compared to the previous record. Stratmann awarded 8.5 out of ten points. For Alex Henderson from allmusic , The New Order Testaments is “the best release ever”. The record is just as powerful as the debut, but the songs are more catchy. The Aerosmith cover Nobody's Fault is one of the best the band has released. The rating was 4.5 out of five stars. Alex Straka from Powermetal.de also considered The New Order to be the “far better, because more sophisticated output” compared to The Legacy , and the record was “one of the greatest Thrash Metal albums”. Especially the track Disciples of the Watch is one of the “band classics”, only Nobody's Fault he called “meaningless”.
