Gene Hoglan
Gene Hoglan ; Bourgeois: Eugene Victor Hoglan II (born August 31, 1967 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American drummer who played in numerous metal bands. He is currently a member of Dark Angel , Testament , Meldrum , Pitch Black Forecast, Zimmer Hole and Mechanism.
Life
Hoglan came into contact with the hard rock scene very early on through bands like Kiss and Black Sabbath . At the beginning of the 1980s he got to know the NWoBHM and began to get into the tape trading scene. Hoglan taught himself to play the drums at the age of 14. In 1984 he founded the Fanzine Braindamage together with his sister Lisa . He worked as a roadie for Slayer in 1984 and founded his first band Wargod with Michelle Meldrum in the same year, which brought it to two demos (1985 and 1986). In 1984 he also replaced Jack Schwartz as drummer for Dark Angel . He also participated as a songwriter on their albums Darkness Descends (1986), Leave Scars (1989) and Time Does Not Heal (1991). In 1992 Hoglan got out after not a single original member was left in advance, and joined Death . Together with Chuck Schuldiner he then recorded the albums Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic . After Schuldiner had concentrated on his band Control Denied and Death had meanwhile disbanded, Hoglan joined Devin Townsend's project Strapping Young Lad in 1997 . In the same year he participated alongside Strapping Young Lad City also on the strong to the Death Metal style similar Demonic album for Testament .
From 1997 to 2007 Hoglan was a permanent drummer with Strapping Young Lad, but he still found time to take part in numerous bands and projects. As a session musician, he took over the drums in Old Man's Child (1998, album: Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion ), The Almighty Punchdrunk (1999, album: Music for Them Asses ) and Daemon , to name just a few. As an official member, he was also involved in Tenet , a side project of the Strapping Young Lad guitarist Jed Simon .
In 2004 he replaced Martin Lopez at Opeth , who was suffering from panic attacks, for a show . In 2005 he repeated his engagement for Opeth on the festival tour Sounds of the Underground . He can also be seen in the music video The Grand Conjuration .
Hoglan also works for the fictional death metal band Dethklok , who star in an American cartoon series called Metalocalypse . In 2007 he took over the drums at Meldrum as a friendship service for his long-time friend Michelle Meldrum. In 2008 he founded the band Pitch Black Forecast with Mushroomhead singer Jason Popson, worked with Unearth and recorded the third Zimmer Hole album When You Were Shouting at the Devil… We Were in League with Satan . He also took part as a drummer in a Forbidden reunion, where he replaced the original member Paul Bostaph .
In addition to playing drums, he also recorded a few guitar riffs for Dark Angel and worked as a producer and sound engineer for Silent Scream and Cranium, among others.
From 2009 he was temporarily active as a drummer at Fear Factory . In autumn 2009, Hoglan also completed the DVD The Atomic Clock , which he sells on his website. In 2012 he played again for Testament on their album Dark Roots of Earth .
