Terria is the fourth studio album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend . The album was released in August 2001 on Townsend's HevyDevy Records label. It was only able to place itself in France at number 125 on the album charts and in Japan at number 81 on the Oricon charts .

background

Townsend felt he had alienated many fans with his previous 2000 album Physicist and decided to make a more personal and honest album. The idea came to Townsend while driving around Canada with his band one morning and decided to write an introspective album and dedicate it to his homeland. The songwriting took place in Vancouver during the summer of 2000 . Townsend produced an album with Terria like a "heavily illustrated stream of consciousness ". Gene Hoglan on drums , Craig McFarland on bass and Jamie Meyer on keyboards were involved in the recording . The artwork is by Travis Smith, who previously worked for Psychotic Waltz , Iced Earth and Opeth .

music

Terria was described as "melodic and atmospheric" with elements from pop rock and ambient paired with the hardness typical of Townsend . Terria uses musical themes from Townsend's earlier albums like on Ocean Machine: Biomech . Nevertheless it is more restrained and “uses the silence as part of the music”. Townsend named Weens White Pepper as inspiration for the album.

publication

Terria was released in August 2001 on Townsend's independent label HevyDevy Records. It is sold by HevyDevy in Canada, Sony in Japan, and InsideOut in Europe and North America . A limited double CD version was also released, which, in addition to the bonus track Universal, contained a multimedia section with footage from a Devin Townsend concert in Japan and audio commentary on the album

Reviews

Sputnikmusic gave the album four stars and described Terria as "not a perfect album, but tremendous and, if you allow it, gripping". Michael Edele from the online magazine laut.de characterizes the album as "sometimes ... damn bulky", Townsend doesn't care about common song structures and Terria is "hard to beat in terms of intensity ". Michael Rensen from the music magazine Rock Hard says that Devin Townsend set music to music for his home country Canada and at the same time his hectic inner life with a perfect sense of atmosphere, dynamism and moods. Like Michael Edele from laut.de, he draws parallels to the US progressive metal band Tool .
