Mechanize is the eighth studio album of American Metal - band Fear Factory . It was published on February 5, 2010 in Germany and on February 9, 2010 in the USA and internationally.

Emergence

The album was in the period from July to September of 2009 in the Surplus Studios in California Van Nuys , a district of Los Angeles , recorded , produced and mastered .

Gene Hoglan took over the work as future Fear Factory drummer in the run-up to the album's creation process. He replaced long-time band member Raymond Herrera on drums. Dino Cazares also returned to Fear Factory and replaced Christian Olde Wolbers, who was previously responsible for bass and guitar. This line-up change, which preceded the recording process for Mechanize, was the cause of some differences of opinion between the band members, in addition, both Herrera and Wolbers were not kicked out of the band, instead the Fear Factory project was restarted with the involvement of Gene Hoglans as a new permanent member.

The track Fear Campaign is one of the few Fear Factory songs to contain a guitar solo.

Editions

Mechanize came out in four different versions:

  • a standard version that includes the album in record or compact disc format with 10 titles.
  • a limited edition in Digipak format including bonus tracks (both as part of the physical data carrier and in the form of music files that can also be downloaded from the Internet) and interactive content that can be accessed online. In addition to the bonus titles mentioned (remastered demo recordings from 1991), the online offer also includes a photo gallery with promo photos of the band, desktop backgrounds and a competition. The availability of this online offer is guaranteed for twelve months from the release of the album.
  • a strictly limited fan box in the form of a tool case made of metal with stamped Fear Factory logo, which - in addition to the digipak album - contains pencil, hammer, screwdriver, pliers, folding rule, tape measure, patch , poster , certificate and sticker.
  • a festival box, which contains the album in a jewel case (on this are the three demo songs as a bonus), an MC with three demo songs from 1991, a belt with the band logo, a bandana and earplugs.

reception

Alex Henderson described the album in his review for Allmusic as not very "fresh" and free of any real innovations, but still admitted the band had a powerful sound and attention to detail. Henderson gave Mechanize 3.5 out of 5 in his album review .

" [...] Mechanize is Fear Factory's first album since Cazares' return, and the Cazares / Bell / Stroud / Hoglan lineup doesn't disappoint. This early 2010 release / 2009 recording doesn't break any new ground for the band - Mechanize is very much a throwback to the industrialized Fear Factory sound of the '90s - but there is no shortage of passion on scorching tracks like "Christploitation , "" Designing the Enemy, "" Oxidizer, "and" Industrial Discipline "[…]. If Mechanize lacks the freshness that characterized Fear Factory on Soul of a New Machine, Demanufacture, or Obsolete back in their '90s heyday, that doesn't make the performances any less inspired or focused. Cazares […] is still a sledgehammer of a guitarist, and he plays like he is thrilled to be a part of Fear Factory again. Mechanize isn't quite in a class with Demanufacture or Obsolete, which are widely regarded as two of Fear Factory's most essential releases. But it's still an album that longtime followers will welcome. "

In his laut.de review on Mechanize , Michael Edele Fear Factory confirms that he has released an album at the usual high level and classifies it stylistically between demanufacture and obsolete . With this release, however, the band no longer set any accents, Edele continues. The laut.de editors awarded Mechanize 3 out of 5 possible points.

" [...] As was to be expected, Fear Factory tied in with the album rather on the albums from the middle career phase. So "Mechanize" also fits somewhere between "Demanufacture" and "Obsolete", at least in terms of heaviness, the knitting pattern of the songs and mechanical, overcooled approach. […] In principle, the whining is at a high level, but thanks to Arkaea and Divine Heresy you can already ask yourself whether Fear Factory is still setting real accents in this millennium. An album at a high level, but whether the Americans can build on their old success times? "

The reaction to the new Fear Factory record from Jochen Gedwien from Plattentests.de is similar - an album in the usual Fear Factory manner, without changes, without stylistic development, but of the usual high quality. Gedwien awards 5 out of 10 possible points in his album review.

" [...] If you are looking for surprises or style changes, you will not find what you are looking for on" Mechanize ". But time travelers do. Progress through regression. Where other genre representatives come up with a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles in today's times and absolutely want to change, the metal heroes of the 90s return to their roots in phases. […] The main focus is given in the familiar manner and with great aggression. Everything as always: With "Mechanize" there is Fear Factory - where it is written on it. "

Single releases and music videos
