Demanufacture (from English manufacture: to manufacture, to fabricate, for example : to defabriken) is the second studio album by the American metal band Fear Factory . It was released on Roadrunner Records in June 1995 . It is considered a classic and has been described as one of the "most outstanding and important metal albums of the nineties". In addition to the Death Metal- like style of the previous album Soul of a New Machine , industrial metal elements as well as synthesizer and vocal effects were increasingly added on the record . Replica was released as videos in 1995 and the cover piece Dog Day Sunrise in 1996 .

History of origin

Following the release of the Remix - EP Fear Is the Mind Killer 1993 Fear Factory had dismissed in 1994 their bassist Andrew Shives for in-band differences. His successor Christian Olde Wolbers should also record the album Demanufacture , which was recorded in October and November of that year. However, since he did not yet master the songs sufficiently, guitarist Dino Cazares played most of the bass tracks on Demanufacture , which led to an argument between the two musicians. Olde Wolber's bass playing can therefore only be heard in the chorus on Self Bias Resistor and on HK (Hunter-Killer) .

There were also disputes over mixing, this time between Cazares and producer Colin Richardson . Due to the intensity of the argument, record company and producer Dino Cazares forbade attendance at the mix. After Richardson had mixed three tracks, Roadrunner Records decided to entrust Cazares with the task together with Rhys Fulber and Greg Reely. The record was mixed at Enterprise Studios in Burbank , California , February 4-26 , 1995, and four songs were re-sung by singer Burton C. Bell , as Cazares was dissatisfied with Richardson's production of the vocal tracks.

“From then on, I knew the album would be a masterpiece. We created a groundbreaking new sound. I think half of it is based on the production and the mix ... Demanufacture still sounds incredible today. "

- Dino Cazares 2008

In three pieces, HK (Hunter-Killer) , Demanufacture and Pisschrist were samples from the movie Terminator 2 used the album which is why, among many fans a kind of "unofficial T2 Soundtrack" is. Due to the quarrels with Richardson, among other things, the production costs doubled to almost 180,000 dollars, these costs could only be compensated by the tour for the next album Obsolete . Demanufacture had sold around 800,000 times worldwide by 1998, around 500,000 of them in Europe. In 1995 the band began a world tour, including with Ozzy Osbourne , and in 1996 Fear Factory toured extensively in Europe with Manhole and Drain . In 1997 the remix record Remanufacture (Cloning Technology) followed , on which various mixers, some of them from the techno sector, remixed the demanufactured pieces in an electronic guise.

concept

The album follows an overall concept of the relationship between man and machine, inspired by films such as Terminator 2 , among other things . In the course of the album, the protagonist experiences various emotions such as melancholy , rebellion, aggression, hopelessness or frustration.

reception

Demanufacture received good to euphoric reviews. Frank Albrecht from Rock Hard called the album a “very special work” that was “perfectly thought out down to the last detail”. In addition to the individual abilities of the musicians, what is “unique” is the “cold, mechanical and heartless atmosphere that transports it”, which makes it the “musical reflection of the year 1995”. Albrecht gave the highest number of points ten. Jason Birchmeier from allmusic also speaks of Demanufacture as “one of the most exciting releases of its time”, the record remains a “landmark”. Compared to the previous album, Birchmeier emphasizes that it contains fewer and longer pieces. Machine-like guitar riffs paired with the machine-like drumming of Raymond Herrera. This "man-machine sound" is the essence of Fear Factory. Birchmeier awards four out of five possible stars.

The editors of the Rock Hard took Demanufacture in their 500 albums comprehensive leaderboard at the 249th spot on.
