The Legacy ( English for the legacy or the heritage that is) debut album of American thrash metal - band Testament . It was released on Megaforce Records in April 1987 . It was produced by Alex Perialas . The name of the album goes back to the band's previous name, Legacy .

History of origin

After Steve Souza left Will to join Exodus in 1986 , the band found a new singer and front man in Chuck Billy of the hard rock band Guilt , whom Souza himself recommended. In early 1987, Jon Zazula from Megaforce signed the band. Testament gained immediate notoriety with the album in the Bay Area thrash scene and beyond. Even before the record was released, the band had been reported in the trade press. Alex Skolnick's sophisticated solo play in particular caused quite a stir at the time. The subsequent tour with Anthrax , on which the mini-LP Live at Dynamo was recorded on June 8, 1987, also contributed to the increase in awareness. This live album was released at the end of 1987.

Guitarist Eric Peterson later commented on the making of The Legacy :

"I can't believe that we wrote this stuff when we are 17, 18, and 19 years old. Although Formation ... stands on its own, we cannot even write music today like we did back then. The Legacy will always be our legacy. "

- Eric Peterson

“I can't believe we wrote this stuff when we were 17, 18, and 19 years old. Although Formation ... stands on its own, we can't even write music today like we did then. The Legacy will always be our legacy. "

reception

Holger Stratmann from rock-hard magazine saw Testament at the time of the publication of The Legacy already on the level of Metallica and praised Chuck Billy's vocals, which he emphasized over that of his predecessor Steve Souza and compared it to James Hetfield's style. The production also shows parallels to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning . He awarded 9.5 out of ten points. Alex Henderson from allmusic saw not only Metallica but also musical influences from Judas Priest . He also highlighted Alex Perialas' production. The album was rated 4.5 out of five stars. On the website www.bloodchamber.de, the higher melodiousness compared to comparable publications by Slayer or Exodus was particularly emphasized. The highest number of points was awarded with ten points. Alex Straka from Powermetal.de writes that “classics after classics” follow The Legacy . With this album and its successor The New Order , Testament mutated into the "most respected newcomer on the metal scene".

In the book Best of Rock and Metal, the best albums in the opinion of the German rock-hard magazine, the record was 51st of the 500 albums discussed. Andreas Himmelstein called the production “the measure of all things” for the time. Skolnick's guitar playing is still “beyond any doubt”.
