Turtle Lake is located in northwest Wisconsin, about 40 km east of the St. Croix River . This forms the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota and flows into the Mississippi about 110 km southwest of Turtle Lake .

In a northeast-southwest direction, the Cattail State Trail runs through the community of Turtle Lake. This is a combined hiking, riding and cycling path called a Rail Trail on the route of a disused railway line. The path can also be used with quads and mopeds, and in winter with snowmobiles.
