The Manitowoc River is formed in eastern Calumet County from the confluence of its two headwaters:

  • The South Branch Manitowoc River , the longer of the two headwaters, rises in the northeast of the Fond du Lac County and flows in a northeast direction into the Calumet County. There it passes the town of Chilton and unites with the Killsnake River .
  • The North Branch Manitowoc River rises in northern Calumet County. From there it flows in a southeast direction to the confluence with the South Branch Manitowoc River.

The largest tributary of the Manitowoc River is the Branch River , which comes from the north .
