The first residents came in January 1845. A sawmill and a gristmill formed a settlement called Stantonville . In 1852 a new land buyer named the area Chilington in memory of his hometown Chilington , England. He sent an oral notification of the name change to the administration. Since three letters were accidentally left out in the middle of the name, the parish is still called Chilton to this day.
