Leathermouth is an American hardcore punk band founded in 2007 , whose singer and founder is My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero.
Band history
Frank Iero had some old friends who played in different bands and who had now decided to form a band together. They played Iero some of their pieces that they had already recorded themselves. He was enthusiastic and was determined to participate in the success of this band. He suggested they sign them to his Skeleton Crew label as soon as they found a singer. After Iero returned from a tour with My Chemical Romance , he asked the band if they had found someone to do the singer's part in the meantime. They now had a singer, but he couldn't produce any useful lyrics because he was very inexperienced in this area. From then on Iero took matters into his own hands. He wrote the lyrics and rented a studio where the band could practice. Iero wrote all of the lyrics for Leathermouth's debut album in just one week. So he was brought into the band as a singer. He has played with Pencey Prep, Hybrid, Sector 12, I Am A Graveyard, The Pole Smokin 'Five, Give Up The Ghost, Reggie and the Full Effect and a The Cure tribute band called Love Cats.
In 2008, the band signed a deal with Epitaph Records instead of Iero's Skeleton Crew label, as originally planned , as he feared it might get too complicated to promote the album while caring about the other bands on his label and My Chemical Romance to take care of. Brett Gurewitz, President of Epitaph Records, was so enthusiastic about the first demos and their intensity that he accepted immediately. According to Iero, it had always been his dream to be under contract with a band with Epitaph.
In January 2009, their first album called XO was released.
Here is what Iero says of Leathermouth: “For me Leathermouth is an outlet for all the bad things that are going on in the world that make me sick. (...) Through Leathermouth I can scream out all the aggression that has built up inside me. "
Critics claim that the band's style is inspired by 1980s hardcore punk . According to Iero, however, it is the horror films from that time that have influenced him a lot.
In a 2012 interview, Iero revealed that the other band members would no longer be interested in the project because they have now found religion . He himself does not want to give up Leathermouth, but it is unclear even to him whether there will be new music at some point.
