Shafik Hout

Shafik Hout , Arabic شفيق الحوت Schafiq al-Hut , DMG Šafīq al-Ḥūt , also Shafiq al-Hout or Shafik al-Hut (born January 13, 1932 in Jaffa ; † August 2, 2009 in Beirut ), was a co-founder of the PLO and a long-time member of the organization. He was a close advisor to Yasser Arafat until a dispute over the Oslo Accords.

In 1948 he and his family had to flee to Lebanon . He studied at the American University in Beirut. After a short time in Kuwait , he returned to Beirut in 1958. Since 1964 he was editor-in-chief of al-Hawadeth magazine. Shafik Hout took an active part in founding the PLO. From 1964 to 2004 he was the organization's representative in Lebanon. Between 1974 and 1993 he was a member of the PLO delegation to the UN General Assembly in New York. He was a member of the Palestinian National Council and was part of its executive committee. After the Oslo Accords was signed in 1993, Al-Hout resigned from the Executive Committee in protest.
