Charles E. Wilhelm (* 26. August 1941 in Edenton , North Carolina ) is a General of the United States Marine Corps in retirement .

Life

Wilhelm attended Florida Southern College , from which he graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism . This was followed by a master’s degree in business administration at Salve Regina College in Newport . In addition, Wilhelm completed training at the Naval War College .

Military career

During his military service, Wilhelm held numerous commands. During his two rounds of service in the Vietnam War, he was first platoon leader , then company commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 8th Army of the Marines and the 2nd US Marine Division . He was also an advisor to the Vietnamese Army and commander of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit .

After holding positions as Assistant Battalion Operations Officer, Operations Officer and Executive Officer in the 1st Battalion of the 1st Army of the Marines and in the field of supplies , Wilhelm worked for the United States European Command, among others .

In August 1988 he was seconded to the II Marine Expeditionary Force as deputy chief of staff and promoted to brigadier general.

From July 1990 to July 1992, he served in the United States Department of Defense before moving to the 1st Marine Division as commanding general . From December 1992 to March 1993, Wilhelm took part in Operation Restore Hope as commander of the Marine Corps Somalia . On July 15, 1994, after being promoted to Lieutenant General , Wilhelm took command of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command at Quantico . On September 25, 1997, he took over command of the US Southern Command, which he held until his retirement on November 1, 2000.

Since his retirement, Wilhelm has worked at the Institute for Strategic Research at the United States Army War College . He is also an employee of the Center for Defense Information (CDI). Since 2003 he has also worked at the Battelle Institute .
