John R. Galvin
John Rogers Galvin (born May 13, 1929 in Wakefield , Massachusetts , † September 25, 2015 in Jonesboro , Georgia ) was a general in the US Army , from 1987 to 1992 9th Supreme Allied Commander Europe and at the same time commander of the US European Command , as well Former 6th Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University .
Military career
From 1948 to 1950, Galvin served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard's 182nd Infantry Regiment . He then got the chance to study at the US Military Academy at West Point , from which he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering ; in the same year he received his officer license as a second lieutenant . Galvin also holds a Masters of Arts from Columbia University , worked at the University of Pennsylvania and as a research fellow at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy . Galvin served in various infantry units in Puerto Rico in 1959 and was a ranger instructor in Colombia . He later served two rounds (tour of duty) , i.e. two years, in the Vietnam War , the first time with the 1st US Cavalry Division and the second time with the 1st Battalion of the 8th US Cavalry Regiment. Galvin served in a variety of overseas assignments. He was also visiting professor at the US Military Academy at West Point, military assistant and adjutant to the Secretary of the Army , assistant assistant chief of staff for training at Fort Monroe , Virginia , and commanding general of the 24th Infantry Division (mechanized) at Fort Stewart , Georgia .
In 1973 Galvin began a seven-year stay in Europe, during which he was appointed deputy division commander of the 8th US Infantry Division (mechanized) in Mainz . In 1983 he returned to Stuttgart to take over command of the VII US Corps as the commanding general . He was then transferred to Panama , promoted to general and took over command of the US Southern Command from 1985 to 1987 . On June 25, 1987 he was given command of the US European Command and a day later he was also appointed Supreme Allied Commander Europe . On June 23, 1992, he passed command to General John M. Shalikashvili and retired a short time later.
Galvin was fluent in Spanish and German and has published three books: Minute Men , a study of the First Battle of the American Revolutionary War , Air Assault , an analysis of the evolution of air mobility in the 20th century, and Three Men of Boston , a study of the political events that took place led to the American War of Independence.
John Galvin died at his home on September 25, 2015, at the age of 86, of complications from Parkinson's disease .
