Kirstjen Michele Nielsen (born May 14, 1972 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) is an American politician . On December 6, 2017, she became Minister of Homeland Security . On April 7, 2019, she submitted her resignation.

Life

Kirstjen Nielsen grew up in Clearwater , Florida . She graduated from Georgetown University and then the University of Virginia , where she received her Juris Doctor degree in 1999 . During the tenure of US President George W. Bush , she served as an adviser to the President. She also ran a think tank in Washington, DC

From January to July 2017, Nielsen served as Chief of Staff to Minister John F. Kelly . After his appointment as Chief of Staff of the White House , she initially stayed in Kelly's staff as his deputy (White House Deputy Chief of Staff) . On October 11, 2017, US President Donald Trump nominated her as Minister of Homeland Security. The Senate confirmed the decision in December 2017 with 62 votes to 37. Nielsen supports the separation of children and parents in the case of illegal immigrants.

The Washington Post reported in November 2018, citing President staff, that Trump was planning to replace Nielsen. He is dissatisfied with their commitment to border security. On April 7, 2019, she announced her resignation.
