The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium (short: AvH ) in Hamburg is a public high school in the Wilstorf district . It was founded in 1956 as a scientific secondary school for boys in Wilstorf . Since 1959 it has been named after the German natural scientist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt .

School establishment

The "Wissenschaftliche Oberschule für Junge Wilstorf" initially consisted of only 7 teachers and around 150 students. For the first six months after its foundation in April 1956, it was housed in the premises of the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Harburg-Heimfeld. In view of the emergence of numerous new residential areas in the southern parts of the Harburg district , the entire school was relocated to Hanhoopsfeld in September 1956 in order to ensure the school supply of the new building areas. On the hundredth anniversary of the death of the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt, the school was named Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium on May 6, 1959 by a resolution of the Hamburg Senate .

Development

Along with the heavy development in the south of Hamburg in the 1950s, the school complex of the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium is a document of urban development in the post-war period. Initially, the school consisted of only temporary buildings. It was not until September 1959 that the construction of permanent school buildings began, most of which still exist today. For this part, series construction types from the Hamburg Building Authority were primarily used. A special architectural feature is the rectangular school yard, which lies between the specialist class wing, administration wing and sports hall and is thus completely surrounded by buildings. All of the original structures were connected with covered walkways at ground level, which is typical of the construction of the " pavilion school " at that time . The continuous school growth in the following fifty years resulted in the construction of many additional pavilions to make room for more classes. In 2005, the specialist wing was expanded to primarily offer specialist rooms for geography and other classrooms. At the beginning of 2016, the music pavilion was first dismantled, then the demolition of all pavilions began. In autumn 2017 a new multi-storey modern classroom building could be moved into. The new multi-purpose hall, the "Arena", was completed in February 2019 and is used together with the neighboring Lessing district school. In addition to spacious music and theater rooms, it offers a large cafeteria for lunch and a stage.

Project work and sustainability

Since the beginning of the nineties of the 20th century, the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium has been committed to sustainability in the sense of Agenda 21 . Since 1994 the school has had the title Environmental School in Europe . Due to the establishment of a "sustainability audit" in the sense of EMAS and the successful execution of the "fifty-fifty projects" to save energy and water as well as efficient waste avoidance and other projects in the area of ​​"sustainable action" and "climate and environmental protection" In 2017 the school won this award for the 23rd time in a row.

In its school program, the school is committed to “sustainable development in line with Agenda 21”. For this reason, the students take an active part in numerous projects to promote environmental awareness and sustainability. Since 2005, the project "Lebendige Engelbek - Learning in the River" has been taking place regularly in spring, in which 5th grade students and the upper level profile course "Sustainability in Nature and Society" renature a piece of a nearby stream in accordance with the European Water Framework Directive . In 2009 the Körber Foundation included this project as part of the "Instigate! 50 Impulses for Hamburg" campaign, and in 2012 it was awarded the Hamburg Education Prize.

Since sustainability does not only consist of the ecological dimension, the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium also tries to strengthen the social awareness of its students. From 2000 to 2005 the grammar school maintained a partnership with a school in Gambia . In the course of the “Gambia under power” project, groups of teachers and students visited the African partner school several times in order to set up a solar system there and thus ensure the supply of electrical energy. The Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium has been participating in the Comenius program since 2005 .

In recent years, the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium has been working more closely with contemporary witnesses . As part of this cooperation, a play about the life of Salomon Perel , who was present at the premiere and with whom the grammar school maintains a particularly close partnership, was created in 2004 under the name “Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon” .

In 2007, a student company at the Alexander von Humboldt Grammar School brought out a collection of memories from Holocaust survivors under the title “Continued - 7 Jewish Fates in World War II” . The book is sold through the school and is also available in bookshops across Germany. In the interests of social sustainability, some pupils at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium also created a teaching concept that went well with the contemporary witness book so that the contemporary witness book could also be used directly in current school lessons.

In 2008, a theater group from the grammar school brought the HIV problem onto the stage with their play “Future positive” . Just like “Hitler Youth Salomon” and “Continued”, this project was awarded the Bertini Prize . In recognition of this project work to promote the concept of sustainability, the school was consistently honored as a project of the UN Decade " Education for Sustainable Development ".

Natural sciences

The natural sciences subjects mathematics , physics , chemistry , biology and computer science are taught at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium . To promote talent, there are additional offers outside of class times, such as the “Physics AG” or the “Open Laboratory”. In the past, groups of pupils at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium achieved great successes in the state competition “ Jugend forscht ” and in the Hamburg competition “Natex” (scientific experimentation).
